So, I just watched the first episode of Duets and I’m just really not sure why this show is necessary. I love Kelly Clarkson. She’s absolutely one of my favorites and that’s probably the primary reason I even bothered watching. I had no idea what the premise was when I started my recording but as the show went on it sort of seemed like it was just a vehicle for these four stars to show off their talent.
The whole process for choosing the two individuals they would duet with was kind of all over the place and pretty boring. I don’t know. Maybe I was just not in the right mood for it.
When the host, whose name started with a Q and whose demeanor was way too chipper, announced that the three stars who weren’t singing were going to vote I was skeptical. When they showed the “big board” I just got irritated. It seemed cheap and like some sort of old school game show. When the first guy that sang stayed on top after the other seven had sang - many of whom were clearly better - I was over it. It seemed like there should have been some sort of additional vote at the end, or some kind of final opportunity to rank the contestants. I really didn’t like it at all.
What I learned during this show was, holy crap John Legend is amazing and really, anyone would sound good singing with him. Jennifer Nettles is actually super nice and while I don’t like her music, she can really sing. And her second contestant was hands-down the best one on the show…not her first one. Kelly is amazing but I thought she picked badly for her duet partners. I didn’t think either one of them sounded good. Finally, I realized that I don’t like Robin Thicke. I don’t like his music and he just rubs me the wrong way. I had to fast forward through both of his performances. Ick.
I will probably watch next week because nothing else is on right now but more than anything, I just miss The Voice.
Woke up from a nap where I dreamed that Todd Carey and I were talking about music and he was speaking a mix of English and Spanish and telling me about all these great fans from Mexico and I just said, “I love that about music. How it doesn’t matter what language you speak because the music sounds the same in all of them.”
Clearly I speak the truth in dreams…
